About Saoirse Temple...
Author. Editor. Word Enthusiast.
I've spent much of my life surrounded by words—reading them, writing them, editing them, and occasionally arguing with them.
I'm a Canadian author and professional editor with a background in writing, publishing, research, and library services. My career has taken me from managing public libraries to writing novels, publishing nonfiction, and helping other authors navigate the sometimes bewildering business of turning a manuscript into a finished book.
Along the way, I've learned that good writing isn't simply about following rules. It's about communicating ideas clearly, telling stories effectively, and knowing when the rules serve the writing—and when they get in the way.
The Editor
As an editor, I work with fiction and nonfiction authors at various stages of the writing process, from structural and developmental editing to copyediting and proofreading.
My approach is collaborative, thorough, and grounded in respect for the author's intentions. I'm not interested in rewriting someone's work to sound like mine. I'm interested in helping writers communicate what they intended, with greater clarity, consistency, and confidence.
I believe in honest feedback, careful attention to detail, and explaining the reasoning behind editorial recommendations. Sometimes that means identifying a structural problem; sometimes it's questioning a character's motivation; and sometimes it's tracking down a comma that's wandered somewhere it doesn't belong.
Whatever the manuscript needs, the goal remains the same: strengthen the writing without losing the writer.
The Author
I'm also an independently published author of fiction and nonfiction.
My work includes the Bounders fantasy trilogy, On the Wings of Grace, Remembering Julius Alexander Isaac, and books about grammar, self-editing, and the practical challenges of authorship.
Writing my own books has given me a valuable perspective on the editorial process. I understand the vulnerability involved in sharing a manuscript, the frustration of revisions, and the satisfaction of finally holding a finished book.
It's also taught me that an author and an editor are working toward the same objective, even when they disagree about a sentence along the way.
Beyond the Manuscript
My fascination with language doesn't end when I close a manuscript.
I publish S.A.L.T. in the Ink, a weekly newsletter exploring the history, quirks, and occasional absurdities of language, writing, and storytelling.
I'm also a game designer and an enthusiastic collector of creative projects. Whether I'm developing a word game, experimenting with a new idea, or disappearing down an etymological rabbit hole, curiosity tends to be the common thread.
A Final Word
I take writing seriously. Myself, considerably less so.
I believe professionalism and personality can coexist, that constructive criticism should actually be constructive, and that there's almost always something new to learn.
Whether you're looking for your next good read or an experienced editorial partner for your own manuscript, I'm glad you've found your way here.
Welcome to my world of words.
