How to Make an Indie Author’s Day (It’s Easier Than You Think)

The holidays are rolling in with their usual mix of twinkle lights, warm drinks, and the low-level panic of trying to find gifts that don’t scream I bought this at 11 p.m. in a parking lot.
But amidst all the bustle, there’s a lovely little opportunity hiding in plain sight: supporting the indie authors who’ve been filling your shelves, your feeds, and your imagination all year.
And the best part?
Most of the ways you can support them don’t cost a dime. (Though yes, indie authors everywhere will absolutely swoon if you buy their books. We’re easy like that.)
Here are some simple, meaningful ways to lift up your favourite storytellers this season — myself included, of course. Hi.
Show a Little Love on Social Media
Every like, comment, share, or “This made me laugh!” nudges an author’s posts into the light where new readers can see them. The algorithms may be moody little gremlins, but your engagement feeds them in exactly the right way.

Tell Someone About the Books You Enjoyed
Word-of-mouth is the oldest (and still the best) book marketing tool.
If you loved something an indie author wrote, tell someone — your friend, your mom, your book club, your barista… okay, maybe not the barista unless they ask, but you get the idea.
Better yet, share a link to the book.(Speaking of which:
Leave a Review — It Truly Helps
A few honest sentences on Amazon, Goodreads, or even a quick social media post can make a huge difference. You don’t need to write a dissertation. You don’t even need to write a paragraph.
Just… something.
Support Their Creative Spaces
Maybe you can’t buy a book right now — that’s okay. Truly.
But tossing a tiny tip into an author’s Ko-fi is like saying, “I see the work you’re doing, and it matters.”
A small tip keeps creativity humming along. And sometimes it buys actual coffee, which fuels the whole operation.
If You Can Buy a Book, Indie Books Make Wonderful Gifts
They’re personal, meaningful, and they support real humans doing real creative work. Plus, your favourite author absolutely does a little victory dance every time a sale notification pops up. (We pretend we’re cool about it. We are not.)

Spread a Little Cheer Directly
A quick message, a kind word, or even a “Your stories made my year brighter” is enough to keep an author going through the winter doldrums.
Publishing is tough.
Kindness isn’t.

And If You’re Reading This…
Hi. I’m one of those indie authors. And your presence here already means the world.
If you enjoy my books, my posts, my chaos, or my ongoing feud with punctuation, I’d be honoured if you supported my creative work in any way that feels good to you this holiday season.
Every tap, share, review, tip, purchase, or word of encouragement is a gift.
And I’m grateful for every single one.
Happy Holidays!
