What the Heck is Patreon?

Back in the day, patrons of the arts provided artists with financial support, supplies, spaces to study and work, exposure for their works, elevated social status (by association), and significant commissions. The level of support was dependent on the patron's ability and willingness to sponsor any given artist, and it was often conditional. The amount of money, length of time and productivity could all factor into the agreement between patron and artist.

Michelangelo enjoyed the patronage of several people during his career. The Medici family--specifically Lorenzo de Medici--took Michelangelo under their wing and provided him with studio space and place to live. He also received support from popes and cardinals through various commissions, most notably by Julius II, who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.

While the idea of patronage for the arts has endured for many centuries, it has also evolved. Today, creators in a variety of disciplines have access to support through online platforms such as Patreon. This modern-day system of patronage for the arts enables artists, writers, film makers and the like to create and share their art while receiving some financial help along the way. Far from expecting patrons to put out hundreds or thousands of dollars, Patreon allows patrons to give small monthly stipends to artists in exchange for behind the scenes glimpses into the creative process, early access to works in progress and digital downloads or printables to enjoy. This isn't money for nothing! Patreon is a business. It takes time and commitment on the part of the artist to sustain interest and keep the patrons coming back. And paying! My Patreon is where I share my books in the form of chapter previews, lore and history surrounding the characters and their worlds, art, printables and other downloadable content. It is also where I get feedback from people, which I use to improve my writing so that I can publish books that people will enjoy. Engaging my patrons and making them feel like they are part of the process is my goal. I'm not just selling books; I am building a community.

I would be thrilled if you were to take a moment and check out my Patreon page. Whether you follow me for free, or choose to help me keep the magic alive with a small, monthly donation, you have my undying gratitude. Welcome to the Kingdom of Epoh! Here there be dragons!
